Community & Education: Community Collaboration

Student Musician of the Month

A collaboration with the Daily Sun newspaper and the Exchange Club of Flagstaff recognizing outstanding high school musicians — instrumentalists or vocalists. The SMOM is recognized with an article in the newspaper, an announcement from the Ardrey stage before an FSO concert and a public speaking and performance appearance at an Exchange Club meeting. Our current SMOM is John Harkness, a trumpet player who attends Northland Preparatory Academy. Click here to download an application for Student Musician of the Month.

Former SMOMs include Kresley Figueroa, Avi Anne Pagofie, Bailey Cunningham, Elizabeth Scarnati, Daniella LaPlante, Seva Haug Baltzell, Catherine Thornsley, Arlo Adams, Aurora Zoe Lawrie, and Hannah Wayment-Steele.

Mentoring Through Music

This collaborative pilot project spearheaded by the Flagstaff City Mayor’s office, the FSO, and the Juvenile Court system of Coconino County mirrors the aspirations of El Sistema to use music as a change agent for youth. Our program uses symphony attendance to help at-risk youth build and strengthen social skills and self esteem, encouraging the likelihood of their success with education, employment and personal growth.
