We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Michelle Wachter as FSO’s new Executive Director, effective June 2024.

A dynamic and accomplished artist-educator, arts administrator, and advocate for the transformative power of music in our communities, Michelle brings a wealth of experience and a passion for inclusive and impactful artistic opportunities to the FSO.

With a career spanning fifteen years in higher education and nonprofit organizations, Michelle has dedicated herself to promoting equitable access to arts education and arts-based programming. Her commitment to fostering inclusive environments has been evident through her work in various leadership roles within collegiate, local, and state affiliates of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), a nonprofit organization focused on advancing music education and ensuring every student has access to high-quality programs.

From 2015 to 2023, Michelle served as Associate Teaching Professor of Class Piano at Northern Arizona University (NAU). During her tenure, she taught group piano and piano pedagogy while coordinating the piano area of the NAU Community Music and Dance Academy. Her contributions to the music community extend beyond the classroom; Michelle has published articles in peer-reviewed piano journals such as American Music Teacher, delivered presentations at national, state, and local music conferences, and performed collaboratively and solo throughout Arizona.

Michelle’s educational background is equally impressive. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in piano pedagogy and a master’s degree in piano performance from the University of South Carolina. Additionally, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in both music and English from Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Michelle’s vision and dedication to the arts align perfectly with the FSO’s mission to enrich, engage, and inspire the community through orchestral music. The FSO Board of Directors is excited to welcome her on the eve of the Symphony’s 75th anniversary season.

“I am delighted to join the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and look forward to working with the talented musicians, dedicated staff, and passionate supporters of this wonderful organization”
Michelle said. “Together, we will continue to promote the transformative power of music and ensure that our programs are accessible and impactful for all members of our community.”

Please join us in welcoming Michelle Wachter to the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra.
