By September 26, 2023 No Comments

Sergei Rachmaninoff, born on April 1, 1873, was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the late Romantic period. Rachmaninoff’s music is known for its rich harmonies and expressive melodies.

Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, which will be performed by the FSO during their season kick-off concert on Friday, September 29th at 7:30pm in Ardrey Auditorium, is one of his most renowned and beloved compositions. It was composed between 1906 and 1907 and is considered a masterpiece of the late Romantic era.

But a name like Rachmaninoff is more relatable than you think! This Russian composer’s influence is all over pop music! The famed 70s ballad by Eric Carmen, “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again” is inspired by the third movement of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2. That is just one example of how his compositional legacy is living amongst pop culture. Watch the video below for more pop songs influenced by his work, and you’ll be shocked at how many you recognize!

Bottom line? We can thank this composer not only for the gift of his heavenly music, but for the way he inspired the melodies and harmonies of many other musicians!
